Sarah Elizabeth Bennett Columbus, OH — The Columbus community is mourning the loss of Sara Bennett, a devoted mother, passionate educator, and tireless advocate, who passed away at the age of 37 after a courageous battle with ALS. Sara’s life, though tragically shortened, was marked by love, resilience, and the profound impact she made on her family, students, and community.
Sara was the loving mother of two young boys, aged 5 and 7, and cherished her life with her husband, Rusty, and their loyal dog, Grif. Her home radiated warmth, joy, and laughter, and she nurtured her children with unconditional love, guidance, and compassion that will continue to shape their lives.
Prior to her diagnosis, Sara dedicated 15 years as a high school Social Studies teacher, inspiring students as a club advisor, swim coach, and mentor. She also served on the board of a suicide prevention non-profit and ran a small business helping people get organized—continuing her lifelong mission of service and advocacy for others. Colleagues and students remember her as a thoughtful, encouraging, and passionate instructor who cared deeply about those around her.
Outside of her professional and family life, Sara found joy in yoga, dancing in her kitchen, and savoring life’s simple moments. She approached life with energy, curiosity, and generosity of spirit, leaving an enduring impression on everyone she met.
Sara was diagnosed with ALS in March 2023, a year after her symptoms began. While the disease forced her to retire from teaching and adjust to a loss of independence, Sara faced her journey with remarkable courage and grace. Even in her final months, she maintained her love for life, her devotion to family, and her thoughtful reflection on the world around her.
In a poignant Instagram post, Sara shared her reflections on her last months:
“I am not in pain, or tired. I can laugh, talk, and I can move. Reflecting in my last few months of my life, I am glad I didn’t go suddenly even WITH the suffering. I finished my list. Even if you don’t believe in anything, I am feeding the earth, and my tree. I loved this life, and am grateful for the time.”
Her words reflect the courage, gratitude, and mindfulness that characterized her life and her approach to even the most difficult challenges. Sara’s perspective on her final days serves as a testament to her strength, resilience, and deep appreciation for life.
Sara Bennett’s legacy is one of love, mentorship, and unwavering advocacy. She leaves behind a family who adored her, students and colleagues whose lives she enriched, and a community inspired by her generosity, compassion, and authenticity.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are being handled privately by her family, who have asked for respect and privacy during this time. Sara’s spirit will continue to live on through her children, her loved ones, and all those touched by her warmth, guidance, and passion for life.
Sara Bennett will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever celebrated for the love, joy, and wisdom she shared with the world.
